Investment Approach
We care most about developing an individual investment program specifically suited to each of our clients. Generally, this means we seek reasonable, safe returns by emphasizing long-term investments in high quality instruments that reflect the industry segments growing around the world. While taxes do not mandate our decisions, we are sensitive to capital gains and other considerations when possible. While our portfolios do trade on occasion, generally turnover is low.
We use fundamental “bottoms up” analysis of a business to analyze its financial strength and overall health, management and competitive advantages, and market position and competitive stance. We combine that with global economic analysis, known as “top down investing” and use both international and national economic indicators like GDP growth, inflation, exchange rates and productivity as tools to hone in on prospective investment ideas. The result is a portfolio constructed primarily of individual stocks rounded out by exchange-traded funds (ETF) and mutual funds that may be used to cover a specific area we deem attractive.
Equity Management
Our investment approach centers on the belief that stocks will rise over the long term, reflecting growth in earnings, company reinvestment and dividends. We choose the companies with the best financials, long term consistency and earnings growth. Reasonable valuation is an important part of the initial decision to buy a stock and we are always looking for a bargain. We meet and review our portfolio selections as often as three times a week.
Fixed Income
We have specific
guidelines about fixed income and the kinds of bonds we buy. This involves evaluation of coupon rates,
maturities, and after tax return as it directly relates to each client
individually. Using economic data like
interest rate movements, demand and supply of money around the globe, and credit
trends, we determine the bonds with the best maturity schedule and pricing
point to fit a portfolio.
